Sikkim Manipal University Distance Education recently conducted a convocation ceremony across core cities

DISTANCE education wasn’t something very common till about 10 years back, but with time has emerged a viable supplement and alternative to the formal system, which is precisely why it has grown at a phenomenal pace.

V Sivaramakrishnan, member of the senate, Sikkim Manipal University, said, “SMU-DE’s job-ready curriculum designed by industry experts, innovative learning techniques and award winning technology has made it one of the most preferred destinations. This year, we have around 1,76,000 students on our rolls; 4,40,000 were admitted since we began the programme.

Dr S.S. Pabla, vice-chancellor of Sikkim Manipal University, said, “We rely on industry-academia convergence and parity with the formal system. To ensure employability of graduates, we induct employer groups both at the curriculum designing stage and the implementation stage. Our students are given industrial exposure through project works and on-job training.”

The directorate has started five departments comprising information technology, management and commerce, health and life sciences, vocational sciences along with arts and humanities. Nearly 54 programmes are covered under these.”

SMU has been authorised to offer BA and BCom along with specialisation and diploma programmes in financial planning, supply chain and export import management. The BSc programmes offer certificates and specialisation in networking and technology. All the diplomas and certificates are validated by some of India’s best known knowledge creators like Datacraft, FTDC and IndiaSkills. Such programmes aim at creating market ready professionals.
